  2. Select 1 “Account Info”
  3. From the list of options, select 1 “My number”
  4. A pop-up message will be displayed on your phone stating your phone number in this format: “Y’ello! Your mobile number is 2348XXXXXXXXXX”

A shorter path for this method is to simply dial *123*1*1#.

Your number will be displayed in the same format above. 

Checking your MTN Number – Method 2

This is also a USSD method of checking MTN phone numbers, but it is relatively straightforward.

Simply dial *663#.

Your mobile number will be displayed on your phone and a message with your phone number will also be sent. 

Checking your MTN Number – Method 3

This method involves using the MyMTNApp, which is a self-service portal through which subscribers can perform various activities and check information about their line.

So, simply open the app and your phone number should be displayed on the screen for you to see. 

Using the MyMTNApp for the first time will require you to provide your MTN number (the one you cannot remember), so it is not the best option if you haven’t logged into the app before. 

Checking your MTN Number – Method 4

This is a smart way to check your MTN phone number and it involves the use of the “Call me back” feature.

“Call me back” is a service that allows MTN users to send short messages like “Please Call Me Back” to other MTN users for free.”

Your phone number will be displayed on the phone of the person you sent it to, and you can just copy it from there. 

The code for MTN call me back is *133#.

To send please call me back on MTN, simply dial *133#, input the number you want to send the message to, and select a message variation of your choice.

How to Transfer Airtime on MTN 

It is now possible to transfer airtime to your loved ones on the MTN network, thanks to the MTN Share (previously Share ‘N’ Sell) service.

The service is available to all new and existing prepaid and postpaid MTN subscribers and is free of charge.

However, to be able to transfer airtime on MTN, you must change your default pin which is typically 0000.

Follow the process below to change your MTN transfer pin:

Via SMS

Send an SMS to 777 in this format: Default PIN SPace New PIN Space New PIN to 777 (take note of the space).

For instance, if you want to change your default pin to 2222, send the message to 777 in this format: 0000 2222 2222. 

Via USSD

Simply dial the USSD code in this format: 777*Default PIN*New PIN* New PIN#.

For example, if you want to change your default pin to 2222, dial the USSD in this format: *777*0000*2222*2222#

After using either of the above methods, you will receive a message saying the transfer pin change was successful.

Now you can proceed to transfer airtime on your line with the new pin.

How to Transfer Airtime on MTN via SMS

  • Send an SMS to 777 in this format: Transfer, Recipient’s Number, Amount, and PIN (put a space between each set of numbers). For example, if you want to transfer 500 naira airtime to 08166666666 and your pin is 2222, send the message to 777 in this format: ‘Transfer 08166666666 500 2222’.
  • After sending the SMS, you will receive a message asking you to confirm the transfer.
  • Confirm the transfer by sending YES to 777. 

How to Transfer Airtime on MTN via USSD

  • Dial the USSD code in this format: *777*Recipient’s Number*Amount*PIN#. For instance, if you want to transfer 500 naira airtime to 08166666666 and your pin is 2222, dial the USSD in this format: *777*08166666666*500*222#. 

Upon completion of the transfer, you will receive a message saying the transfer was successful.

Kindly note the following tips on airtime transfer on MTN

  • You can only transfer airtime to other MTN users. Trying to transfer to other networks like 9Mobile, Airtel and Glo will not work. 
  • You can only transfer in Naira and not in kobo. For instance, you can transfer 80.00 naira but not 80.84 naira. 
  • You can transfer as low as 50.00 naira and as high as 5,000.00 naira in a single transaction.
  • There is no daily limit to the maximum number of transactions
  • You can transfer as much as 100,000.00 naira from your MTN line to either a single or multiple MTN lines daily. 
  • If you own an MTN prepaid account but you don’t have enough airtime to transfer to another line, you will receive an error message and the transfer will not be completed. 
  • If you own an MTN postpaid account, airtime transfer will only be possible when your airtime account balance is positive. You will not be able to transfer airtime on your MTN postpaid account if your account is negative. For instance, you cannot transfer airtime on your postpaid account if your account balance is -100 naira. On the other hand, if you have 1,000.00 naira in your account, you will be able to transfer up to 1,000.00 naira to other MTN lines. 

How to Transfer Data on MTN

Courtesy, of MTN’s Data Gift service, MTN users can now transfer data from their active data balance, buy data, and request data from other MTN users.

This service is available to all MTN users. 

There are a couple of ways to transfer data to other people on the MTN network.

You can use the MTN app, send SMS codes, via USSD by dialing *131*7#, or by dialing direct shortcodes.

The options for transferring data on MTN are discussed below:

Buy Data for a Friend

This data gifting method allows you to buy daily, weekly, and monthly plans for your friends, with the cost of the data plan deducted from your airtime balance.

To do this, simply dial a USSD code in this format: *131*Bundle activation code*Beneficiary’s Phone number#.

Data Transfer

Here, you can transfer data directly from your data balance to your friends and family on the MTN network.

To do this, simply dial *131*Phone number*Data amount# or, send a message to 131 in this format: Transfer Phone number Data amount (put a space between each string of numbers.)

To view all pending data transfer requests, simply dial *131*7*4#

Will I Require a PIN to use the MTN’s Data Gifting Service?

NO.

All you need to transfer data on MTN is the beneficiary’s phone number and select a data plan to send. 

How Many Times Can I Transfer Data in a Day on MTN?

You have a maximum of two times to transfer data in a day on MTN.

Also, note that the total amount of data you are allowed to transfer in a day is 100MB. 

What is MTN USSD code?

MTN USSD is a set of digits with “*” to the left and “#” to the right that activate various services on the MTN network, e.g. *556#.

They can also be referred to as MTN service codes.

There are various MTN USSD codes, each with its function.

Can I keep my MTN number if I travel out?

YES. 

A service called Keep My Number (KMN) allows subscribers to retain their numbers for a specified period when they travel out.

It is important to activate KMN because if the line remains dormant for about 180 days, it will be deactivated and reassigned to a new MTN subscriber. 

The KMN service, however, is not for free.

A service charge will be deducted from your airtime balance and the amount depends on the period of years you will be outside the country.

For 2 years

Cost: 819 naira

You can renew the KMN service after the initial subscription period expires. To renew the subscription, just dial the code for your preferred length of time. 

What is the MTN Call Me Back Code?

The MTN Call Me Back code is *133#.

To send a free call me back message on MTN, simply dial *133#, input the phone number to which you want to send the message, and select the message variation of your choice.

The following are the available message variations:

  1. Call me
  2. Call me back. I love you
  3. Send me Credit
  4. Call me. I have gist for you
  5. Call me. I need your assistance

Selecting the number designated to each Call me back message will send that particular message to the phone number you inputted.

What is MTN SIM Swap?

Many things could warrant a SIM Swap – maybe you lost the SIM, or it got stolen with your phone – maybe it broke, or it got too old.

A SIM Swap comes into play when any of the aforementioned things happen to your SIM card, but you don’t want to buy a new one.

You want to retain the phone number and everything on it. 

Here are the things you will need to complete an MTN SIM Swap:

  1. The SIM card/line must have been properly registered
  2. The SIM pack or other evidence of direct purchase/ownership. Where SIM pack is unavailable, an affidavit attesting to ownership and loss will suffice
  3. A valid form of identification with your picture on it such as an International Passport, Driver’s License, National ID Card, Voters Identification Card, and NINs slip with ID numbers. 

You will be asked to provide the following information:

  • Last Recharge Date
  • Mother’s maiden name
  • State of Origin
  • Date of Birth
  • Four (4) Frequently Dialed Numbers
  • Last Recharged Amount

If you are unavailable, an authorized representative can complete the SIM swap on your behalf.

This representative will be asked of the following:

Requirements to be provided by your representative

1. An affidavit by you stating reasons for replacement, reasons for the inability to carry-out replacement in person.

2. A copy of your ID

3. A valid means of identification of the authorized representative. 

What is the Code for MTN Balance Inquiry?

To know how to check MTN balance, you have to understand that it can either be for data balance or airtime balance.

To check your MTN airtime balance on MTN, simply dial *556#.

A message highlighting your MTN airtime balance will pop up on your phone almost immediately.

To check your data balance, dial *559# or dial *131# and select “Balance check” from the list of options.

In both instances, your data balance will be sent to you via text message.

How to Borrow Airtime on MTN

MTN XtraTime is the MTN service that allows all prepaid MTN customers to borrow a certain amount of airtime when they run out of airtime.

The borrowed amount is always deducted immediately on the next recharge. 

Requirements to be eligible to borrow airtime on MTN

Check the following requirements to be eligible to borrow airtime on MTN:

  • You must be a Prepaid customer
  • Your phone number must be duly registered
  • You must have been active on the MTN network for over 3 months
  • You must have spent at least 200 naira monthly for 3 months
  • Your account balance must be between 0 and 75 naira. 
  • You must not be owing any outstanding/borrowed airtime. 

If you possess all these requirements, then you’re good to go. 

How to borrow Airtime on MTN via USSD

  1. Start by dialing *606#
  2. Select your preferred amount from the list of available options and click on send. 
  3. After confirming the transaction by clicking on send, you will receive the airtime immediately and a successful notification message. 

Note that the system will also deduct a service fee of 15.36% on all amounts, except for 25 naira, which you will be charged 20.48%.

This means that the service charge on borrowing 25 Naira is 5.12 naira, so you will receive 19.88 credit.

However, 25 Naira will be deducted on your next recharge. 

How to borrow Airtime on MTN via 606 IVR

  1. Dial 606 and listen carefully to the automated customer care voice on the line
  2. Select your preferred language by typing the number designated to it
  3. Next up, you will be asked to select either XtraTime or XtraByte. Since you want to borrow airtime, select XtraTime.
  4. After selecting XtraTime, the voice will call out the available amounts for you to borrow
  5. Select your preferred amount by typing the number designated to it
  6. After selecting the amount, the voice will ask you to confirm the transaction. Confirm the transaction. 
  7. Upon confirmation of the transaction, you will receive the borrowed airtime and a successful notification message. 

The range for borrowing airtime on MTN is between 25 naira and 5,000 naira.

However, note that this is only a general range because every customer has a different borrow limit. 

How to Check XtraTime Balance on MTN

By wanting to check your XtraTime balance, you want to check the amount of airtime you’ve borrowed on MTN.

It is quite simple.

Here are a couple of ways you can check your XtraTime account balance:

  1. Simply dial *606#, select “My Account” from the list of options, and then select 2 to view your XtraTime account balance. 
  2. Dial 606 and select your preferred language from the options called out by the automated customer care voice. Follow the voice prompt, and enter 5. Your XtraTime account balance will be sent to you via SMS within seconds. 
  3. Text Balance to 606 and your XtraTime account balance will be sent to you. 

Can Borrowed Airtime on MTN Expire?

NO. 

Borrowed airtime on MTN does not have an expiry date. 

How Can I Configure My MTN Line for Data?

If you’re having issues browsing the internet at a fast speed, you might want to consider configuring your MTN line on your phone.

To get these configuration settings, simply text SETTINGS to 3888.

This service is free of charge.

The configuration settings will be sent to you via SMS.

Ensure you save the settings immediately you receive them so you do not mistakenly delete them.

Confirm that you have the correct Proxy settings for Smartphones on your phone by following the steps below:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Select More Network or Mobile Network

  4. Click MTN GPRS or MTN WEB
  5. Remove the Proxy IP address: 10.199.212.2
  6. Delete the Port setting: 8080
  7. Save and try browsing again.

If your browsing issues persist, you may have to visit the nearest MTN Service Center or call 180 to speak with an online MTN customer care representative. 

How to Cancel Data Bundle Auto-Renewal

Opting out of auto-renewal for a data bundle on MTN is quite easy and there are four different ways to go about it. 

  1. Open the myMTN app on your phone and click on the following options to cancel auto-renewal: Phone Number > My Subscriptions > Toggle off Auto-Renewal > Turn Off.
  2. Visit https://mymtn.com.ng/login.
  3. Log in with your MTN phone number or User ID. After successfully logging in, click on the following options to cancel auto-renewal: Phone Number > OTP > My Subscription > Data Bundle > toggle off the Auto-Renewal button.
  4. Dial *131*1*9*3#. Reply with the number that corresponds to the bundle you’re trying to cancel auto-renewal for. Then reply with 1 to proceed.
  5. Dial 180. Select 1 from the list of options. Select 2 and click on 2 again to cancel data auto-renewal. 

How to Subscribe for Data on MTN

Select “1. Data plans” and select from the list of data plans.

After confirming the transaction, you will be credited with data. 

How to Load MTN Card

How to Check MTN Night Plan Balance

The nightlife bundle allows MTN users to subscribe to a data plan that runs from 12 am to 5 am.

The options available for the MTN night plan are 250MB for 25 naira and 500MB for 50 naira.

The 500MB night plan can be activated only once per day, while the 250MB plan can be activated twice a day. 

To activate the 250MB MTN nightlife plan, send NT1 to 131 via SMS.

To activate the 500MB MTN nightlife plan, send NT2 to 132 via SMS.

You will receive the data you requested and have access to it between 12 am and 5 am.
