1. Yaba College of Technology

Yaba College of Technology, commonly known as Yabatech, is the first on the list of polytechnics in Lagos state and is unarguably the most popular.

It was established in 1947, making it the first higher educational institution in Nigeria.

Since its inception, Yabatech has changed its name thrice.

It was first named Yaba Higher College. 

Years later, the name was changed to Federal Polytechnic Yaba, a name it was called before being given its current name.

The school is amongst the top 10 polytechnics in Nigeria and is a place you need to visit anytime you’re in Lagos.

Mode of admission

Admission into Yabatech is through sitting for an entrance examination.

Students who chose the school as their first or second choice in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination are sometimes called upon for an internal examination.

Courses and Programs

Yabatech, which has over 20,000 students, offers a wide range of courses and programs.

The school has accreditation to run about 64 programs.

These programs, which are either on the OND, HND, and post-HND levels, sprea across 8 schools and 34 departments.

Aside from these, there are a couple of certificate programs that the school offer.

Furthermore, Yaba College of Technology runs two programs in alliance with the Federal University of Technology, Akure, and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

The programs are Postgraduate Diplomas in Engineering and B.Sc (Ed) courses in Vocational and Technical Education, respectively.


The tuition in Yabatech depends on the program.

For full-time OND courses, the tuition is within the range of #44, 500.

While for full-time HND programs, the fee is currently #45,500.

For part-time ND programs (ND1 – ND3), the tuition is between the range of #51,000 – #71,000.

2. Lagos City Polytechnic

  • Ownership: Private

This polytechnic was founded in 2007.

It is the first private polytechnic in Nigeria and is located within the Ikeja area of Lagos state.

The school has the full accreditation of the National Board for Technical Education and has a strong affiliation with Southwestern University, Nigeria.

Mode of admission

Joint Admissions Matriculations Board (JAMB) handles admission into this institution and all its programs.

When the candidate passes the JAMB examination, there is also an expectation that the prospective student meets the minimum requirement of N.B.T.E, before gaining admission.

This is for the Ordinary National Diploma (OND) programs.

Admission into the Preliminary National Diploma (PRE-ND) and the Higher National Diploma (HND) follow a different procedure.

A form is purchased in that regard.

After the prospective has satisfactorily met the minimum requirement, it remains the exclusive preserve of the management to confirm the offer.

3. Lagos State Polytechnic

The Lagos State Polytechnic was founded in 1977 and is commonly known as LASPOTECH. 

It is a state government-owned institution located around the Ikorodu axis of the state.

The school was formerly The Lagos State College of Science and Technology.

It is unarguably one of the oldest polytechnics and currently operates on three campuses; Ikorodu, Isolo, and Surulere campuses.

Among other things, this polytechnic is popular for its massive student population, which is way above 40,000.

Mode of admission

Students aspiring to gain admission into LASPOTECH, having filled the institution as their preferred polytechnic, are required to sit for the JAMB examinations.

Once their scores are above the stipulated cut-off mark, they can apply directly to the school.

They might be required to sit for an entrance examination.

Aside from this, there is also room for Direct Entry admission for students from other schools.

Courses, Programs, and Faculties

In Lagos State Polytechnic, there is a wide range of courses and programs to choose from.

These courses, programs, and departments are spread across the following faculties; 

  • Schools of Engineering
  • Agriculture
  • Communication and Liberal Studies
  • Environmental Studies
  • Pure, and Applied Sciences
  • Management and Business Studies, and

Newly admitted students of Lagos State Polytechnic are expected to pay the following fees:

  • Result screening fee; N2, 500
  • Clearance Exercise fees; N2, 700
  • LASPOTECH FEE; N1, 500
  • Matriculation fee; N2, 500
  • Examination fee; N5, 000

Old students are to pay the above fees, too, except for the acceptance and application fees. 

In addition to these fees, the tuition fees are dependent on the level of study. For ND1 students, the tuition is about N27,950, and ND2 students pay N25,810. Of course, these fees are subject to review.

4. Grace Polytechnic

Grace Polytechnic is the second private polytechnic in Lagos.

It is located within a quiet neighborhood in Lagos State.

It is one of the newest higher institutions in Lagos State, poised to provide qualitative and sound learning.

This institution has a seamless process of admission, which is according to the school’s policy.

Grace Polytechnic, a new polytechnic in Lagos State, Nigeria, offers a few courses in the Ordinary National Diploma (OND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) levels.
