History of Delta State Polytechnic Ogwashi-Uku

Delta State Polytechnic Ogwashi-Uku is a polytechnic in Delta State that serves the needs of the state and Nigeria at large. 

The polytechnic dates back to the era of the military regime in Nigeria.

The school was once in good standing but was shut down by the military government in 1986 by the then Military Administrator, Lt. Colonel Jerry Useni.

The shutdown undid the work of Michael Okonjo (the then Chairman, House Committee on Education), and his brother, late Isaac Okonjo (the then Secretary to the Bendel State Government) who ensured the Ogwashi-Uku polytechnic was established. 

The members of the community cried out against this as they thought it unfair, and pestered the state government on the need for a new polytechnic.

After much hitches, a new polytechnic was opened on January 23rd 2002 in Ogwashi-Uku, and it was inaugurated by James Onanefe Ibori, the second executive governor of Delta State.

The polytechnic was opened together with two other state polytechnics in Delta State –Delta State Polytechnic Ozoro and Delta State Polytechnic Otefe-Oghara.

Academic activities in this institution began earnestly in 2003 with about 200 students.

Delta State Polytechnic Ugwashi-Uku logo is a simple circle with lines at its sides.

Rector of Delta State Polytechnic Ogwashi-Uku

The rector of Ugwashi-Uku Poly in 2020 is Prof. Stella Chiemeke.

The rector got her Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science in 1986, and a Master of Science Degree in Computer Science in 1992 from the University of Lagos.

After that, she went to the Federal University of Technology Akure in 2004 to get a PhD certificate in Computer Science.

  • Must have at least five (5) Credit Passes in SSCE (WAEC & NECO), GCE O/L, NABTEB or its equivalent in related subjects. This should include English & Mathematics and should be in not more than two (2) sittings.

Candidates for the HND Program;

  • Must have a National Diploma (ND) with a minimum of Lower Credit in the relevant discipline. The ND should be from a duly NBTE (National Board for Technical Education) accredited Institution.
  • Must have at least five (5) credit passes in SSCE (WAEC & NECO), GCE O/L, NABTEB or its equivalent in related subjects including English & Mathematics in not more than two (2) sittings.
  • Candidates with ND at pass level should have a minimum of two years of Industrial Training in the field of specialization.
